Came across this article in The Connaught Telegraph last week about the Castlebar Bacon Factory. Today mark's its 108th birthday. Who would have thought that all these years later the buildings and land would be home to Mayo's # 1 indoor entertainment venue providing endless hours of fun and family entertainment. Employing almost 80 staff Mayo Leisure Point, Mayo Movie World, Castle Leisure Club, Hogs Heaven Bar, and Garbo's Venue rose from the buildings. Including all the surrounding businesses, Tile Warehouse, Albany, Sheridan Electrical, Master Carpets, Crean Mosaics, Mulroy Londis, Lidl, Duffy Tyres, The Movement, and Duffy Tyres all operating on the grounds of the old Bacon Factory. When Joe Mulroy bought the Factory in 1989, after it closed, he had no immediate plans for it, but he had vision and foresight to know it's story wasn't finished and that it had many more years as an important part of Castlebar life and business.
Today we celebrate his vision in keeping it alive and to all who worked in the Castlebar Bacon Factory and the new businesses since 1917.
